Johnson & Evinrude and OMC are brands synonymous with outboard motors.
Ole Evinrude, a Norwegian, made the early outboard. The Johnson Brothers Outboard Motor Company manufactured both inboard and outboard motors. Johnson Brothers were folded into Evinrude. Then the Outboard Motor Company (OMC) bought Evinrude in 1935. When OMC filed for bankruptcy in 2000 Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) bought them. BRP stopped selling under the Johnson brand in 2007 and moved all sales to Evinrude.
The outboard engine’s beginnings have come full circle - at least under the Evinrude brand (and many boaters still search for “Johnson outboard engine parts”).
